Fitness Explorers

This is one pooped out librarian! But it was worth it. We just wrapped up our 4 weeks of Fitness Explorers! What a great time we had doing all sorts of fun things to get our bodies moving. Kids 2 to 4 years of age and their caregivers did all sorts of new things together.

Week 1 was all about our body. We read Dem Bones by Bob Barner and talked about where the bones are inside our body. We sang songs and played games involving our differing body parts. Then we played with lots of locomotor toys.

Week 2 was Under the Big Top - Parachute fun! We moved like animals and then got out the parachutes. Ours looks like a spider's web and comes with bugs to catch!

Week 3 was Yoga! We used books like Little Yoga and My Daddy is a Pretzel to help us stretch and move.
Week 4 was Movement and Good Nutrition. We talked about good food and the food pyramid. Then we revisited some of our favorite yoga poses and had a good snack. We used Play and Freeze Ice Cream makers to roll our way to a healthy snack of frozen yogurt and pretzels with fruit & other goodies brought in by some great mommies.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for this adventurous new program!

Shhhh....

We have to use our inside voices - we're at the library!

Something new

As hip 21st century librarians, we are attempting to keep up with all of the nifty new ways to communicate with the families we serve. So, here is the official Youth Services Blog! We will post here happenings and pictures from our many programs so we can communicate with our families and receive comments to make things better for you.

We may also occasionally ask for input and advice about scheduling and upcoming program ideas. So we hope you will feel free to give us input to make our services better.

Ms Denise will be the first to put herself out there. Here I am in all of my glory at one of our Fitness Explorers programs for 2-4 year old children and caregivers. We had a lot of fun on this day moving like circus animals and using a parachute as the Big Top. Little Owen (in the yellow t-shirt) has been especially open to this new fun and very enthusiastic to try all of the silly things along with me.

We have already received lots of positive comments on this series, so we look forward to running it again next year. In the mean time, we will have fitness programs over the summer for older kids and are planning our first set of Parent/Child Workshops in October.

Becoming a Family Place library has brought so many positive changes to our services and we are thrilled with the results. Please comment here as often as you like and check back often for upcoming news. I will make every attempt to update the blog weekly.
